My Salvation

My first encounter with God

In the fall of 1986, when I was five years old, I asked my father a question from the back seat of our car: “Who is Jesus?” My father pulled the car over, opened the Bible, and showed me why that question mattered more than any other question I could ask. The Bible says that God created us for fellowship with Him, but sin separated mankind from God. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin is more than doing bad things. It is choosing our way instead of God’s way. Because God is the source of life, separation from Him brings death. “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). We cannot remove our guilt through religion, good works, baptism, or trying to become better. That is why Jesus came. Jesus is not merely a teacher or a good man. He is God revealed in human flesh. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). Jesus lived without sin, but He willingly died on the cross in our place. He carried the punishment that our sins deserved. “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4). Jesus rose from the dead, proving that sin and death had been defeated. Salvation is not something we earn. It is a gift that God offers through Jesus Christ. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works” (Ephesians 2:8–9). To receive that gift, you must stop trusting your own goodness and place your faith in Jesus Christ alone. The Bible promises: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). As a five-year-old boy, I called upon Jesus to save me. I did not understand everything, but I understood that I was a sinner, Jesus was the Saviour, and I needed Him. Now the question is yours: Who is Jesus to you? He died for you. He rose again. And He is inviting you to trust Him today.
