Almost everyone identifies themselves with some kind of religious, agnostic, or atheistic identity.
But is there another option?
Is it possible to believe in God without identifying with a religion?
For many people, religion has become a label they wear rather than a relationship they live.
When you strip away all the titles from humanity, we are not nearly as different as we imagine. Deep inside, we all wrestle with the same fears, the same guilt, the same disappointments, and the same longing for love, joy, peace, purpose, and hope.
The Bible teaches that God is not impressed with the names we call ourselves. He looks far deeper than our outward identity. He sees the motives of our hearts and the thoughts of our minds.
In this, all humanity stands guilty before Him.
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"
Romans 3:23
Even the greatest people who have ever lived have fallen short of God's perfect holiness.
God is perfectly holy, and because He is perfectly just, sin must be judged. But the wonderful news is that God is also perfect in love.
His justice demanded that sin be punished.
His love desired that sinners be saved.
That is where the gospel begins.
Religion says, "Come to God."
The gospel says, "God came to you."
Every religion in the world, in one form or another, teaches mankind how to climb toward heaven through personal effort, good works, traditions, ceremonies, knowledge, or self-improvement.
The gospel begins in the opposite direction.
God saw that we could never climb to Him, so He came down to us.
The greatest problem with humanity is not that we belong to the wrong religion.
It is that we have become separated from the God who is life.
We try to change ourselves. We promise to do better. We turn over a new leaf. We become more religious.
Yet every one of us eventually discovers the same truth.
We cannot make ourselves perfect.
We cannot erase our guilt.
We cannot give ourselves life.
The gospel is not another religion for you to conform to.
It is God's invitation to every sinner.
He invites you to come exactly as you are—with all your failures, addictions, fears, shame, weakness, and brokenness. He does not invite you because you have cleaned yourself up. He invites you because only He has the power to transform you.
The same Word that created the universe from nothing is able to take a life ruined by sin and turn a mess into a masterpiece.
God is very good at restoration.
In the beginning, God created mankind for something far greater than religion.
He created us for fellowship.
Adam and Eve walked with God. Their spirits were alive unto Him. They did not need to determine right and wrong for themselves because they trusted the One who is truth itself. His light guided them. His wisdom directed them. His love gave them confidence.
Then they were tempted with a different kind of life.
Instead of depending upon God, they desired to become independent from Him.
The moment they chose independence from the Author of life, they stepped into death.
Because God is the source of all life, to walk away from Him is to walk away from life itself.
Adam and Eve became the doorway through which sin and death entered the entire human race.
Imagine a branch cut from a living tree.
For a little while it may still appear alive.
But because it has been separated from its source of life, death has already begun its work.
That is the condition of every human heart apart from God.
Religion paints the branch.
The gospel reconnects it to the Tree of Life.
Religion says, "Come to God."
The gospel says, "God came to you."
Instead of destroying His creation and starting over, God's love unfolded a plan of redemption.
His plan was never for mankind to invent another religion in an attempt to reach heaven.
His plan was to come to earth Himself and rescue those who could never rescue themselves.
Nearly two thousand years ago, God entered His own creation in the person of Jesus Christ.
Jesus did not come carrying a sword to force people into His kingdom.
He came extending an invitation.
He respected the freedom He had given mankind, yet loved us enough to die in our place.
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8
Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live.
His righteousness became available to us.
He died the death we deserved.
His death became our atonement.
Three days later He rose again, conquering sin and death forever.
His resurrection became our hope.
The Bible simply calls this the gospel.
"...Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures."
1 Corinthians 15:3–4
This is God's invitation.
Not an invitation into religion.
An invitation back to Himself.
When a broken branch is grafted back into a living tree, life begins flowing through it once again.
The fruit does not appear because the branch struggles harder.
The fruit appears because it has been restored to its source of life.
That is exactly what God desires to do in every person who believes the gospel.
He restores us to Himself.
His life begins producing His love, His joy, His peace, and His righteousness within us.
Not by our effort.
By His life.
Religion says, "Come to God."
The gospel says, "God came to you."
Today, God extends that invitation to you.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
Ephesians 2:8–9
You cannot earn His forgiveness.
You cannot deserve eternal life.
But you can receive both as a gift.
The Bible promises,
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
Romans 10:9
And again,
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Romans 10:13
If you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again, respond to Him.
Tell Him that you know you are a sinner.
Place your complete trust in Jesus Christ alone to forgive your sins and save you.
God has promised to save every person who comes to Him by faith.
The moment you trust Christ, you have not embraced another religion.
You have been born again.
You have been restored to the God who created you.
Your Heavenly Father will never leave you. He will teach you through His Word, correct you when you wander, strengthen you in your weakness, and gradually transform you into the image of His Son.
Religion ends with people trying to reach God.
The gospel begins with God reaching you.
And that invitation is still open today.
