“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Genesis 1:27, KJV
To be made in God’s image does not mean that man is divine or that God has a human body. It means that we were created to live in fellowship with God and make His invisible love, wisdom, holiness, and power visible through a life filled and governed by Him.
An Image Makes the Invisible Visible
Think of a light bulb.
The bulb is designed to display light, but it is not the source of the light. By itself it remains dark. When it is joined to the source of power, the light within it becomes visible to everyone around it.
Humanity was created with a similar purpose. We were not made to produce God’s glory independently. We were made to know Him, live beneath His loving government, and reveal His character through the life we received from Him.
God connected His image with entrusted responsibility:
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion...” Genesis 1:26, KJV
Man was created to exercise authority under God’s authority. We were meant to care for His creation according to His wisdom rather than rule it according to our own desires.
What Sin Distorted
When man chose independence from God, humanity did not cease to bear His image. Even after the fall, Scripture still speaks of man as being made in God’s likeness:
“Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.” Genesis 9:6, KJV
The image remains, but sin has distorted what it displays.
Instead of revealing God’s love, we display selfishness. Instead of His wisdom, we trust our own understanding. Instead of exercising dominion beneath His government, we seek control for ourselves.
The vessel remains, but it no longer shines as it was created to shine.
Christ Is the Perfect Image
Jesus Christ is called:
“Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:” Colossians 1:15, KJV
Jesus did not merely teach us what God is like. He made the invisible God known. His words revealed the Father’s wisdom. His compassion revealed the Father’s love. His holiness revealed the Father’s character. His works revealed the Father’s power.
He is everything humanity was created to display, because He never lived independently from the Father.
The Image Restored
Salvation is more than the forgiveness of our sins. Through Christ, we are restored to fellowship with the God whose life we were created to reveal.
God’s purpose is that believers should “be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29, KJV). As we surrender to Christ, His life begins to make the invisible character of God visible through us.
We were not created to become the hero.
We were created to delight in God as the Hero and become witnesses of His glory.
The image of God is not man displaying his own greatness. It is man living in fellowship with God until the invisible God becomes visible through him.
